Critics Consensus

While Sigourney Weaver's feral performance as a resurrected Ripley restores some fun to the Alien franchise, the acid blood running through this fourth entry's veins corrodes whatever emotional investment audiences had left.

Alien Resurrection | Rotten Tomatoes (1) David Hunter The Hollywood Reporter Alien Resurrection checks in with enough slime, gore and scary monster-flick moments to satisfy undemanding audiences. But it's an ugly, animated corpse of a movie stitched together from the other three films in the series. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Alien Resurrection | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The sardonic bits work, but there's none of the old grandeur and depth, and not much horror either. The smell of evil is missing. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Alien Resurrection | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [A] missed opportunity. Julie C I don't understand why this movie gets so much hate. Considering what the director was left with after Alien 3, I think he did a pretty good job.The movie has a distinct visual style which perhaps clashes with the grim tone of the series, but is still beautifully shot. Sigourney Weaver delivers a fascinating, otherworldly take on the character, and while the ragtag crew of mercenaries might feel a bit cartoonish for fans of Ridley Scott’s atmospheric horror (Alien) or James Cameron’s intense action-thriller (Aliens), this movie still gives an interesting and entertaining package.Alien: Resurrection offers a visually stunning and imaginative take on the franchise and, in my opinion, doesn't deserve the level of disdain it received. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Jett S I do not understand the hate heaped on this movie. As an Alien devotee, this is one of my favorites. (The others I like are the original Alien, Prometheus and Alien:Covenant.) First, I loved Ripley's complex character. She was snarky and tender at the same time. And, of course, the hero in the end. I personally thought the chemistry with Wynona Ryder was interesting and well developed over the movie. I could do without the other characters but they were in the vein of the original ensemble. I thought the hybrid creature was pretty novel. The idea of killing your own "child" to save humanity is like a Greek tragedy. This movie had way more to say than the boring Alien 3 and Aliens. As for the love of Aliens, I can't believe they killed off the best thing about Aliens in the sequel. What a mess of a franchise. The two standouts have always been Sigourney Weaver and Michael Fassbender. Which goes to show you still need a star to make a good movie. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Jamie M The script for Alien Resurrection is rough in parts. Ripley’s lines weren’t too bad, but Ron Perlman’s boorish character, Johner, was so over-the-top it stopped being funny—if it ever was, even in 1997. Dominique Pinon’s character as the wisecracking comic relief would have made far more sense in that role, instead of a mumbling dullard. Honestly, I wish they’d killed off Perlman’s character before Wincott’s, as his presence clashed with the previous movies’ ability to keep the characters you could actually care about. Instead, we were stuck with bad jokes and clunky lines for 100 minutes. The gore was excessive, bordering on gratuitous. It felt like the creators didn't respect the franchise and were just cashing in on fan loyalty. I’d give it one star if not for Sigourney Weaver, who carried the movie, and Winona Ryder, who was decent as the gullible android. That said, the idea of an android being less advanced 200 years later stretched the suspension of disbelief a bit too far for me. Though it did give Ripley the line where she should have known Call was an android because she was too humane to be human. Meh. Major annoying points, grenade launchers underwater, dumb androids, unlikelable main characters, Ripley putting a genetic misfit out of her misery with a flamethrower ugh :(, the newborn was just weird looking, unsympathetic characters being kept alive. Watch only if you're have to watch all the Alien movies, but worst in franchise by far.
